Activity Question

Question:

Why does an iron gate kept in the open rust, but an aluminium gate does not?

Activity Response

Answer:

Iron reacts with air and moisture to form a reddish-brown substance called rust, which slowly damages the metal. Aluminium, on the other hand, forms a thin protective layer of aluminium oxide on its surface when it reacts with air. This layer prevents further damage, so aluminium does not rust like iron.
