Grade: I (Age 6–7 years)
Subject: Science (Environmental Studies/Science Introduction)
Duration: 40–45 minutes
Medium of Instruction: Bilingual (Hindi and English) – Using the bilingual technique to scaffold concepts in the mother tongue (Hindi) while gradually introducing and reinforcing English terminology. This builds confidence, ensures comprehension, and promotes transfer of skills between languages.
Date: Flexible (Suitable for early in the academic year)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand what science is in simple terms (विज्ञान क्या है).
- Identify the five senses and name them in both Hindi and English.
- Use observation skills (निरीक्षण कौशल) to describe everyday objects using at least 2–3 senses.
- Develop curiosity about the world around them and express simple observations in both Hindi and English.
Key Vocabulary (Bilingual)
- Science – विज्ञान
- Observation – निरीक्षण
- Senses – इन्द्रियाँ
- See – देखना (Eyes – आँखें)
- Hear – सुनना (Ears – कान)
- Touch – छूना (Skin – त्वचा)
- Smell – सूँघना (Nose – नाक)
- Taste – चखना (Tongue – जीभ)
- Describe – वर्णन करना
Materials Required
- Common classroom objects for observation (e.g., a flower, fruit like apple/banana, bell, soft cloth, feather, stone – safe and familiar items).
- Chart paper with pictures of the five senses (labelled in Hindi and English).
- Flashcards with sense organs (bilingual labels).
- Worksheets: Simple drawing sheet with columns for "What I see/hear/touch..." (bilingual headings).
- Whiteboard/markers.
Teaching Method: Bilingual Technique
- Scaffolding: Begin explanations and instructions primarily in Hindi (L1) for clear understanding, then repeat/introduce key terms in English (L2).
- Contrastive Approach: Explicitly link Hindi and English words (e.g., "Eyes को हम English में eyes कहते हैं").
- Translanguaging: Allow students to respond in Hindi initially, then encourage simple English phrases.
- Gradual Shift: Move from Hindi-dominant to balanced Hindi-English as the lesson progresses.
Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up / Introduction (10 minutes)
Objective: Engage students and introduce the concept of science.
- Greeting and Hook (in Hindi, with English words introduced): "नमस्ते बच्चों! आज हम विज्ञान की दुनिया में कदम रखने वाले हैं। Science मतलब विज्ञान – हम अपने आस-पास की चीजों को जानते हैं, देखते हैं, छूते हैं। Hello children! Today we will start science. Science means विज्ञान – we learn about things around us."
- Story/Questioning: Tell a short story in Hindi about a curious child (e.g., "एक बच्चा था जो हर चीज़ को देखता, छूता और पूछता था – वह scientist बन गया!"). Ask: "तुम्हारे आस-पास क्या-क्या चीजें हैं जिन्हें तुम देखते हो?" (What things do you see around you?) Accept answers in Hindi, then rephrase one or two in English: "Yes, we see a fan – पंखा."
- Introduce Science: On the board, write: Science / विज्ञान = Learning about the world using our senses / हमारी इन्द्रियों से दुनिया को जानना। Explain simply: "Scientists observe – मतलब ध्यान से देखते हैं, सुनते हैं, छूते हैं।"
2. Main Activity: Exploring the Five Senses (20–25 minutes)
Objective: Develop observation skills through hands-on exploration.
-
Present the Five Senses (using chart/flashcards):
Show pictures and say in Hindi first:
"हम पाँच इन्द्रियों से चीजों को जानते हैं:- आँखें – देखने के लिए (Eyes – to see)
- कान – सुनने के लिए (Ears – to hear)
- नाक – सूँघने के लिए (Nose – to smell)
- जीभ – चखने के लिए (Tongue – to taste)
- त्वचा – छूने के लिए (Skin – to touch)"
Repeat in English with gestures: "We have five senses..."
Children repeat after teacher in both languages (choral repetition). -
Hands-On Observation Activity (Group/Pair Work):
Place 4–5 objects on tables (flower, fruit, bell, cloth, stone).
Instructions in Hindi first: "अब हम इन चीजों को अपनी इन्द्रियों से observe करेंगे। ध्यान से देखो, छूओ, सूँघो, सुनो (bell को बजाओ)। Taste सिर्फ fruit का safely।"
Then in English: "Now we will observe these things with our senses. Look carefully, touch, smell, listen (ring the bell). Taste only the fruit safely."Guide questions (bilingual):
- क्या दिखता है? / What do you see? (Color, shape – रंग, आकार)
- छूने पर कैसा लगता है? / How does it feel? (Soft/rough – मुलायम/खुरदरा)
- क्या आवाज़ होती है? / What sound?
- क्या खुशबू है? / What smell?
Circulate and encourage responses: Accept Hindi first ("यह लाल है"), then model English ("It is red").
-
Sharing Observations:
A few children share: "मैंने flower देखा – it is red and soft. फूल लाल और मुलायम है।"
3. Conclusion and Wrap-Up (5–10 minutes)
Objective: Reinforce learning and connect to daily life.
- Recap (bilingual): "आज हमने सीखा कि science में observation बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। हम अपनी five senses से दुनिया को जानते हैं। Today we learned that observation is important in science. We use our five senses."
- Quick Game: "I Spy" in bilingual – Teacher: "मैं कुछ देख रहा हूँ जो red है / I spy something red." Children guess.
- Moral/Curiosity Link: "हर दिन observe करो – नई चीजें सीखोगे! Be curious like scientists."
Assessment
- Formative (During Lesson): Observation of participation – Do students use senses actively? Can they name 3–4 senses in either language?
- Informal: Oral responses during sharing (note who uses simple English phrases).
- Worksheet (Take-Home or End): Draw one object and write/draw 2 observations (e.g., "I see... red" / "मैं देखता हूँ... लाल").
Homework/Extension
- Observe something at home (e.g., a plant or toy) and tell parents 2 things using senses. Draw it and label one observation in Hindi and one in English.
- Bring a safe object next class for "Show and Tell" observation.
Notes for Teacher
- Keep energy high with smiles, gestures, and praise in both languages ("बहुत अच्छे! Very good!").
- Be sensitive to safety (no tasting unknown items).
- Adapt for diverse learners: Allow drawing for non-verbal responses.
- This bilingual approach ensures all children understand deeply in Hindi while building English confidence gradually.
This lesson sparks curiosity, lays the foundation for scientific thinking, and models additive bilingualism from the very beginning!
