Study Material

What are Articles? (आर्टिकल्स क्या हैं?)

English

Articles are small words used before nouns.

There are three articles:

  • A
  • An
  • The

They help us identify whether the noun is general or specific.

हिन्दी

Articles छोटे शब्द होते हैं जो संज्ञा (Noun) के पहले लगाए जाते हैं।

अंग्रेज़ी में तीन Articles होते हैं—

  • A
  • An
  • The

ये बताते हैं कि संज्ञा सामान्य (General) है या विशेष (Particular)।

Activity

Teacher shows different objects.

Students tell whether A, An, or The should be used.

English

Use A before a word that begins with a consonant sound.

Examples:

  • a cat
  • a pen
  • a mango
  • a school

Remember: We listen to the sound, not only the first letter.

हिन्दी

A का प्रयोग उन शब्दों के पहले होता है जिनकी शुरुआत व्यंजन ध्वनि (Consonant Sound) से होती है।

Special Note: We use An before words with a vowel sound, such as:

  • an hour (the "h" is silent)

हिन्दी

An का प्रयोग उन शब्दों के पहले होता है जिनकी शुरुआत स्वर ध्वनि (Vowel Sound) से होती है।

स्वर हैं:

A, E, I, O, U

a university

"University" begins with the consonant sound /yu/.

a European country

"European" begins with the consonant sound /yu/.

an hour

The h is silent, so it begins with the vowel sound /au/.

an honest man

The h is silent.

an MLA

The letter M is pronounced "em", which begins with a vowel sound.

Grade III Tip: Focus mainly on everyday examples such as a book, a cat, an apple, an egg, the Sun, the Moon, and introduce the special cases only as simple enrichment if appropriate for your class.

Teacher Reflection

Students actively participated in identifying and using A, An, and The through picture cards, games, and sentence-building activities. Most learners were able to choose the correct article before common nouns and use them in simple sentences. Additional practice with speaking activities and worksheets will help reinforce the concept, especially the difference between A and An based on sound rather than just the first letter.
