On 15 August 1947, India became independent from British rule.
Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first Prime Minister of independent India, addressed the nation from the Red Fort in Delhi.
The day marked the beginning of a new phase in India's history.
However, independence did not mean that all problems disappeared immediately.
