Study Notes: The Temperate Grasslands – The Prairies
Grade V – Social Studies
1. Introduction
The Prairies are the temperate grasslands of North America. They are vast, open grass-covered plains found mainly in Canada and the United States.
The word Prairie means a large open area of grassland.
The Prairies are famous for:
- Vast grasslands
- Wheat farming
- Cattle rearing
- Large farms
- Modern machines used in agriculture
2. Location
The Prairies lie in the central part of North America.
They mainly cover parts of:
- Canada – Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
- United States – parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and other nearby states
The Rocky Mountains lie to the west of the Prairies, while the Great Lakes and other regions lie towards the east.
Important point:
The Prairies are located mainly between the Rocky Mountains in the west and the more humid regions towards the east.
3. Climate
The climate of the Prairies is temperate, which means it is neither extremely hot nor extremely cold for most of the year.
Main features:
- Summers are warm and sometimes hot.
- Winters are very cold.
- Rainfall is moderate and not very high.
- Most rainfall occurs during the summer months.
- The region may experience strong winds and storms.
- Winters can bring heavy snowfall in many areas.
The amount of rainfall is generally enough to support grasslands and wheat farming.
4. Vegetation
The natural vegetation of the Prairies mainly consists of grasses.
There are very few trees because:
- Rainfall is not very high.
- The region has frequent dry periods.
- Strong winds can make tree growth difficult in open areas.
Types of grasses
The grasses may be:
- Tall grasses where rainfall is higher.
- Short grasses where rainfall is lower.
The grasses provide food for many grazing animals.
5. The Prairies – The Wheat Basket
The Prairies are often called the “Wheat Basket of the World” because they produce huge quantities of wheat.
Why is wheat grown here?
The region has:
- Large flat plains – suitable for farming.
- Fertile soil – good for growing crops.
- Suitable climate – especially for wheat.
- Large areas of farmland – crops can be grown on a large scale.
- Modern machines – tractors, seed drills and combine harvesters make farming easier.
Major crops
Apart from wheat, farmers also grow:
- Maize
- Barley
- Oats
- Flax
- Canola
6. Modern Farming
Farming in the Prairies is highly mechanised.
Farmers use machines such as:
Tractor → Seed drill → Sprayer → Combine harvester
A combine harvester performs several jobs such as cutting and separating the grain from the crop.
Because farms are very large, machines help farmers complete their work quickly.
7. Living of the People
People living in the Prairies are mainly involved in farming and animal rearing.
Farming
Large farms are common. Farmers grow wheat and other crops using modern machines.
Animal Rearing
Farmers also rear animals such as:
- Cattle
- Sheep
- Pigs
Cattle rearing is particularly important in many parts of the grasslands.
Cities and Towns
There are several towns and cities in and around the Prairies. Some important cities include:
- Calgary
- Edmonton
- Winnipeg
People enjoy modern facilities such as schools, hospitals, roads, electricity and communication services.
8. How People Adapt to the Climate
The winters in the Prairies can be extremely cold. Therefore, people:
- Wear warm woollen clothes.
- Use heating systems in their homes.
- Build strong houses suitable for cold weather.
- Use roads, railways and other transport systems to move people and goods.
During summer, farmers make full use of the warmer weather for farming.
9. Important Animals
The Prairies are home to several animals.
Some animals found in the grassland region include:
- Bison
- Deer
- Prairie dogs
- Coyotes
- Various birds
The American bison is one of the most famous animals associated with the Prairies.
