Learning Objectives
Students will:
✔ Understand the properties of light.
✔ Observe the formation of shadows.
✔ Explain reflection using mirrors.
✔ Perform simple experiments with light.
✔ Develop observation and scientific reasoning skills.
Previous Knowledge (पूर्व ज्ञान)
Ask students:
- Why can't we see anything in a dark room?
- What happens when a torch is switched on?
- Why do we see our face in a mirror?
- Why does our shadow appear in sunlight?
Expected Response: We need light to see objects, and shadows are formed when light is blocked.

Introduction Activity (5–10 Minutes)
Teacher Activity
Darken the classroom slightly and use a torch.
- Shine the torch on a wall.
- Place your hand in front of the torch.
- Show the shadow formed.
Ask students:
English
- What do you observe?
- Why is a shadow formed?

Lead students to the concept of Light and Shadows.
Study Material
What is Light?
English
Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
Without light, we cannot see anything.
Sources of Light
Natural Sources (प्राकृतिक स्रोत)
- Sun
- Stars
- Fireflies
Artificial Sources (कृत्रिम स्रोत)
- Electric bulb
- Candle
- Torch
- Tube light
- LED lamp
Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects
Luminous Objects (प्रकाशमान वस्तुएँ)
Objects that produce their own light.
Examples:
- Sun
- Candle flame
- Electric bulb
Non-Luminous Objects (अप्रकाशमान वस्तुएँ)
Objects that do not produce light but are seen because they reflect light.
Examples:
- Moon
- Chair
- Book
- Tree
Types of Materials
1. Transparent Materials (पारदर्शी पदार्थ)
Allow almost all light to pass through.
Examples:
- Clear glass
- Clean water
- Air
2. Translucent Materials (अर्धपारदर्शी पदार्थ)
Allow only some light to pass through.
Examples:
- Butter paper
- Frosted glass
- Thin cloth
3. Opaque Materials (अपारदर्शी पदार्थ)
Do not allow light to pass through.
Examples:
- Wood
- Metal
- Stone
- Book
Shadow (छाया)
English
A shadow is a dark patch formed when an opaque object blocks the path of light.
Conditions for the Formation of a Shadow
Three things are needed:
- A source of light.
- An opaque object.
- A screen or surface.
Characteristics of Shadows
English
- Always dark.
- Shows only the outline (shape) of the object.
- Does not show colour or details.
- Changes size according to the position of the light source.
Reflection of Light (प्रकाश का परावर्तन)
English
Reflection is the bouncing back of light from a smooth surface.
A mirror reflects light and forms an image.
Types of Mirrors
Plane Mirror (समतल दर्पण)
Examples:
- Bathroom mirror
- Dressing mirror
Uses:
- Seeing ourselves
- Decoration
- Periscopes
Everyday Uses of Reflection
- Looking in a mirror
- Rear-view mirrors in vehicles
- Solar cookers
- Periscopes
- Reflectors on bicycles
Classroom Activities
Activity 1 – Make a Shadow
Materials:
- Torch
- Toy
- White paper
Students observe how the shadow changes when the torch is moved nearer or farther.
Activity 2 – Transparent, Translucent or Opaque?
Provide different objects.
Students classify them into:
- Transparent
- Translucent
- Opaque
Activity 3 – Mirror Fun
Students observe:
- Their image in a plane mirror.
- Right-left reversal.
- Image size.
Activity 4 – Guess the Shadow
Show only the shadow of different classroom objects.
Students identify the object.
