What are Acids?

English

Acids are substances that usually have a sour taste and turn blue litmus paper red.

Examples:

  • Lemon juice
  • Vinegar
  • Tamarind
  • Curd
  • Orange juice

Note: Never taste chemicals in a laboratory.

What are Bases?

English

Bases are substances that are bitter in taste and slippery to touch. They turn red litmus paper blue.

Examples:

  • Soap solution

  • Baking soda solution
  • Washing soda

What are Salts?

Salts are substances formed when an acid reacts with a base.

Examples:

  • Common salt
  • Baking soda

Indicators (संकेतक)

Indicators help us identify whether a substance is acidic or basic.

Natural Indicators (प्राकृतिक संकेतक)

1. Litmus

  • Blue litmus → Red in acid.
  • Red litmus → Blue in base.

2. Turmeric

  • Yellow in acids.
  • Turns reddish-brown in bases.

3. China Rose (Hibiscus)

  • Pink/Dark pink in acids.
  • Green in bases.

Neutralization (उदासीनीकरण)

English

When an acid reacts with a base, they neutralize each other to form salt and water. This is called neutralization.

Students test safe household solutions (teacher supervised):

Apply turmeric paste on paper.
