During respiration:

Working of the Respiratory System
Inhalation (श्वास लेना)
- Air enters through the nose.
- Oxygen reaches the lungs.
- Oxygen enters the blood.
Exhalation (श्वास छोड़ना)
- Carbon dioxide leaves the body through the lungs.
Types of Respiration
1. Aerobic Respiration (वायवीय श्वसन)
Occurs in the presence of oxygen.
Produces:
- Energy
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
Examples:
- Humans
- Birds
- Animals
- Plants
2. Anaerobic Respiration (अवायवीय श्वसन)
Occurs without oxygen.
Produces less energy.
Examples:
- Yeast
- Some bacteria
In humans, during vigorous exercise, muscle cells may temporarily carry out anaerobic respiration, leading to the production of lactic acid, which can cause muscle cramps.
Respiration in Different Organisms
Fish
Respiratory organ:
Gills (गलफड़े)
Fish absorb dissolved oxygen from water.
Earthworm
Respiration occurs through its moist skin.
Cockroach
Breathes through tiny openings called spiracles (श्वासरंध्र).
Frog
- Tadpole → Gills
- Adult Frog → Lungs and moist skin
Plants
Plants also respire.
They exchange gases through:
- Stomata (Leaves)
- Lenticels (Stems)
- Roots
Plants respire day and night.
Breathing Rate
Breathing rate is the number of breaths taken in one minute.

Students:
- Count breaths for one minute at rest.
- Run for one minute.

Students breathe onto a mirror.
Observe water droplets formed due to moisture in exhaled air.
Activity 3 – Lime Water Test (Teacher Demonstration)
Blow air gently through a straw into lime water.
Observation:
Lime water turns milky due to carbon dioxide.
Activity 4 – Balloon Lung Model
Materials:
