Mathematics Pre-Requisites for Grade VII

Number System & Basic Operations

  • Reading, writing, and comparing numbers up to 6–7 digits (including Indian system: lakhs, crores)
  • Place value and estimation of large numbers
  • Roman numerals (basic understanding)
  • Whole numbers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
  • Factors and multiples
  • Prime and composite numbers
  • Prime factorization (using factor tree)
  • HCF (Highest Common Factor / GCD) and LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) — very important
  • Divisibility rules (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11)

Fractions

  • Types: proper, improper, mixed fractions
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Comparing and ordering fractions
  • Addition and subtraction of fractions (same & different denominators)
  • Multiplication of fractions (fraction × whole number, fraction × fraction)
  • Division of fractions (basic idea: multiply by reciprocal)

Decimals

  • Understanding decimal place value (tenths, hundredths)
  • Reading, writing, and comparing decimals
  • Converting fractions to decimals and vice versa
  • Addition and subtraction of decimals
  • Multiplication of decimals (by whole numbers and by 10, 100, etc.)
  • Division of decimals (basic)

Basic Algebra Introduction

  • Use of variables / letters to represent unknown numbers
  • Simple patterns and forming simple expressions (very basic exposure from Class 6)

Geometry Basics

  • Basic geometrical ideas: point, line, line segment, ray
  • Types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, straight, reflex)
  • Measuring angles with protractor
  • Understanding elementary 2D shapes (triangle, quadrilateral, circle) and their elements (sides, vertices, etc.)
  • Symmetry (line symmetry in simple figures)
  • Representation of 3D shapes on 2D paper (basic nets / views)

Mensuration (very basic level)

  • Perimeter of simple shapes (square, rectangle, triangle)
  • Area of rectangle and square
  • Idea of volume (only concept, not deep calculation)

Ratio & Proportion (introductory)

  • Concept of ratio
  • Simple equivalent ratios
  • Basic unitary method (very simple)

Data Handling (introductory)

  • Collection and organization of data
  • Pictographs and bar graphs
  • Reading and interpreting simple graphs

Other Important Skills

  • BODMAS / PEMDAS rule (order of operations)
  • Word problems involving all four operations
  • Basic problem-solving and logical reasoning

Most critical prerequisites for smooth transition to Class 7
(these appear repeatedly in Class 7 chapters like Integers, Fractions & Decimals, Rational Numbers, Simple Equations, Lines & Angles, Algebraic Expressions, etc.):

  1. Good command over fractions & decimals operations
  2. HCF / LCM mastery
  3. Prime factorization
  4. Basic angle measurement & types of angles
  5. Perimeter & area of rectangle/square
  6. Understanding of variables & simple patterns
  7. Comfort with negative numbers concept (even if not fully taught, basic idea helps)

If your child is weak in any of these (especially fractions, decimals, HCF/LCM, or basic geometry), it's best to revise Class 6 NCERT chapters first — particularly Chapters 1–8 from the old NCERT Class 6 book or the relevant units from the new Ganita Prakash textbook.

This foundation makes topics like negative numbers (integers), rational numbers, algebraic expressions, equations, and geometry in Class 7 much easier. Let me know if you'd like resources or specific revision tips for any of these!
