STUDY MATERIAL
What is Soil?
English
Soil is the top layer of the Earth. It is a natural resource that supports plant life and many living organisms.
Plants grow in soil because it provides water, air, nutrients, and support to their roots.
How is Soil Formed?
English
Soil is formed very slowly over many years.
It is formed by the breaking down of rocks due to:
- Heat
- Rain
- Wind
- Flowing water
- Roots of plants
This process is called weathering.
Components of Soil
Soil is made up of:
Component
Function
Sand
Helps water drain easily
Clay
Holds water
Humus
Provides nutrients
Water
Needed by plants
Air
Helps roots breathe
Small stones
Add strength to soil
Humus
English
Humus is the dark, soft part of the soil formed from dead plants and animals.
It makes the soil fertile.
Types of Soil
1. Sandy Soil (रेतीली मिट्टी)
Characteristics
- Large particles
- Water drains quickly
- Less fertile
- Light in weight
Examples of crops:
- Groundnut
- Watermelon
2. Clayey Soil (चिकनी मिट्टी)
Characteristics
- Very fine particles
- Holds more water
- Sticky when wet
- Heavy
Examples:
- Rice grows well.
3. Loamy Soil (दोमट मिट्टी)
Characteristics
- Mixture of sand, clay, and humus
- Rich in nutrients
- Holds enough water
- Best for farming
Examples:
- Wheat
- Vegetables
- Fruits
Uses of Soil
English
Soil is used for:
- Growing plants and crops
- Building houses
- Making bricks
- Making pots
- Making roads
- Gardening
Living Things in Soil
Many living things live in soil.
Examples:
- Earthworm
- Ant
- Beetle
- Termite
- Bacteria
- Fungi
Earthworms make the soil loose and fertile.
Soil Erosion
English
The washing away or blowing away of the top fertile layer of soil is called soil erosion.
Causes:
- Heavy rain
- Strong wind
- Cutting trees
- Floods
Soil Conservation
We should:
- Plant more trees.
- Avoid cutting forests.
- Grow grass on open land.
- Prevent overgrazing.
- Save water.
- Avoid pollution.
