What is Soil?

Soil is the top layer of the Earth. It is a natural resource that supports plant life and many living organisms.

Plants grow in soil because it provides water, air, nutrients, and support to their roots.

मिट्टी पृथ्वी की ऊपरी परत है। यह एक प्राकृतिक संसाधन है जो पौधों और अनेक जीवों का जीवन संभव बनाती है।

पौधे मिट्टी में उगते हैं क्योंकि मिट्टी उनकी जड़ों को पानी, हवा, पोषक तत्व और सहारा देती है।

How is Soil Formed?

Soil is formed very slowly over many years.

It is formed by the breaking down of rocks due to:

  • Heat
  • Rain
  • Wind
  • Flowing water
  • Roots of plants

This process is called weathering.

Humus

Humus is the dark, soft part of the soil formed from dead plants and animals.

It makes the soil fertile.

Types of Soil

1. Sandy Soil (रेतीली मिट्टी)

Characteristics

  • Large particles
  • Water drains quickly
  • Less fertile
  • Light in weight

Examples of crops:

  • Groundnut
  • Watermelon

2. Clayey Soil (चिकनी मिट्टी)

The washing away or blowing away of the top fertile layer of soil is called soil erosion.

Causes:

  • Heavy rain
