PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Ask students:

  • Which part of your body helps you think?
  • How do you know something is hot?
  • Why do you remove your hand quickly from a hot object?

INTRODUCTION (5–10 Minutes)

Teacher rings a bell.

Ask:

Who heard the bell?

Students:
"Our ears."

Teacher:
How did your ears tell your brain?

Explain:

"Our body has a communication system called the Nervous System."

STUDY MATERIAL

What is the Nervous System?

English

The nervous system is the control center of our body.

It receives information from different parts of the body, processes it and sends instructions back.

It helps us:

  • Think
  • Learn
  • Remember
  • Feel
  • Move
  • Speak
  • See
  • Hear
  • Taste
  • Smell

Without the nervous system, our body cannot work properly.

Parts of the Nervous System

There are three main parts.

1. Brain (मस्तिष्क)

The brain is the most important organ.

It is protected by the skull.

Functions

  • Thinking
  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Speaking
  • Controlling muscles
  • Decision making
  • Emotions

2. Spinal Cord (मेरुरज्जु)

The spinal cord is like a thick bundle of nerves.

It connects the brain to the rest of the body.

It passes messages between the brain and the body.

It also controls reflex actions.

3. Nerves (नसें)

Nerves are thin thread-like structures spread throughout the body.

They carry messages.

How Does the Nervous System Work?

Example

You touch a hot pan.

Your skin feels heat.

The nerves send the message.

The spinal cord and brain receive it.

The brain sends another message.

You quickly remove your hand.

Sense Organs and Nervous System

Our sense organs collect information.

Reflex Action

Definition

A reflex action is a quick and automatic action without thinking.

Examples

  • Sneezing
  • Blinking
  • Pulling hand away from fire
  • Knee jerk

Importance of the Nervous System

It helps us

  • Walk
  • Write
  • Read
  • Play
  • Think
  • Talk
  • Learn
  • Remember

Care of the Brain

✔ Eat healthy food

✔ Sleep 8–10 hours

✔ Wear a helmet

✔ Exercise daily

✔ Avoid hitting the head

✔ Read books

✔ Solve puzzles

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 – Message Passing Game

Students stand in a line.

Teacher whispers a word.

Students pass the message.

Discuss how nerves pass messages.

Activity 2 – Reflex Test

Drop a ruler.

Students catch it quickly.

Explain reflex action.

Activity 3 – Sense Organ Activity

Blindfold one student.

Ask him/her to identify an object by touching.
