Lesson Plan: Living Organisms and their Surroundings

Learning Objectives

Students will:

✔ Understand the relationship between organisms and their surroundings.

✔ Explain why different organisms live in different habitats.

✔ Identify adaptations that help organisms survive.

✔ Appreciate the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation.

Previous Knowledge (पूर्व ज्ञान)

Ask students:

  • Have you seen a fish living on land?
  • Can a camel live in the sea?
  • Why do birds build nests?
  • Where do you see frogs during the rainy season?

Expected Response: Different organisms live in different places because they need different conditions to survive.

Study Material

What are Living Organisms?

English

Living organisms are things that have life.

They:

  • Grow
  • Breathe
  • Reproduce
  • Respond to stimuli
  • Need food
  • Excrete wastes
  • Move (either from place to place or by body parts)

Examples

  • Human beings
  • Plants
  • Birds
  • Animals
  • Insects

Definition

English

The place where an organism lives is called its habitat.

Hindi

वह स्थान जहाँ कोई जीव रहता है उसे उसका आवास (Habitat) कहते हैं।

Components of Habitat

Biotic Components (जैविक घटक)

Living things

Examples:

  • Plants
  • Animals
  • Bacteria
  • Fungi

Abiotic Components (अजैविक घटक)

Non-living things

Examples:

  • Air
  • Water
  • Soil
  • Sunlight
  • Temperature

Types of Habitats

1. Terrestrial Habitat (स्थलीय आवास)

Organisms living on land.

Examples:

  • Lion
  • Elephant
  • Camel
  • Tiger
  • Human

Types:

  • Forest
  • Desert
  • Grassland
  • Mountains
  • Polar Region

Adaptations in Different Terrestrial Habitats

Desert (मरुस्थल)

Camel:

  • Hump stores fat.
  • Long legs.
  • Broad feet.
  • Long eyelashes.
  • Can survive with little water.

Cactus:

  • Thick stem stores water.
  • Leaves modified into spines.
  • Waxy coating reduces water loss.

Mountain Region (पर्वतीय क्षेत्र)

Animals:

  • Thick fur
  • Strong legs
  • Sharp claws

Plants:

  • Cone-shaped trees
  • Needle-like leaves

Polar Region (ध्रुवीय क्षेत्र)

Polar Bear:

  • Thick fur
  • Thick layer of fat (blubber)
  • White colour for camouflage

Penguin:

  • Streamlined body
  • Thick feathers
  • Fat layer for insulation

Aquatic Habitat (जलीय आवास)

Organisms living in water.

Types

  • Freshwater
  • Marine (Sea)

Examples

  • Fish
  • Whale
  • Dolphin
  • Lotus
  • Water Lily

Adaptations in Aquatic Animals

Fish

  • Gills for breathing
  • Fins for swimming
  • Streamlined body
  • Scales

Whale

  • Blowhole
  • Streamlined body
  • Thick fat layer

Aquatic Plants

Lotus

  • Broad floating leaves
  • Long hollow stem

Hydrilla

  • Thin ribbon-like leaves
  • Flexible stem

Adaptation (अनुकूलन)

English

Adaptation is a special feature that helps an organism survive in its habitat.

हिन्दी

जीवों में ऐसी विशेषताएँ जो उन्हें अपने वातावरण में जीवित रहने में सहायता करती हैं, अनुकूलन (Adaptation) कहलाती हैं।

Classroom Activities

Activity 1 – Habitat Sorting

Provide picture cards of organisms.

Students classify them into:

  • Desert
  • Forest
  • Water
  • Mountains
  • Polar Region

Activity 2 – Guess My Habitat

Teacher gives clues:

"I have a hump."

Students answer:

Camel → Desert

Activity 3 – Living or Non-Living?

Show objects:

  • Rock
  • Plant
  • Dog
  • Toy Car
  • Mushroom
  • Pencil

Students identify whether they are living or non-living.

Activity 4 – Adaptation Match

Match:

Duck

Webbed feet

Fish

Gills

Camel

Hump

Polar Bear

Thick Fur

Cactus

Thick Stem
