The Nervous System

1. The Nervous System

The nervous system is the body's control and communication system. It helps us think, learn, feel, move, and respond to our surroundings.

It receives messages from different parts of the body, processes them, and sends instructions back.

Main Parts of the Nervous System

  1. Brain
  2. Spinal Cord
  3. Nerves

Together, these parts work like a network to control the whole body.

2. Functions of the Nervous System

The nervous system:

  • Controls all body activities.
  • Helps us think and remember.
  • Controls our movements.
  • Helps us feel pain, heat, cold, and touch.
  • Receives information from the sense organs.
  • Sends messages between the brain and the body.
  • Helps us react quickly to danger.

3. The Brain

The brain is the control centre of the body. It is protected by the skull and works all the time, even when we are asleep.

Functions of the Brain

  • Controls thinking and memory.
  • Helps us speak and learn.
  • Controls voluntary and involuntary actions.
  • Receives messages from the sense organs.
  • Sends commands to different body parts.

The brain has three main parts:

  1. Cerebrum
  2. Cerebellum
  3. Brain Stem (basic introduction)

4. Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain.

Functions of the Cerebrum

  • Thinking
  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Intelligence
  • Speech
  • Reading and writing
  • Solving problems
  • Controlling voluntary actions such as walking and writing
  • Receiving messages from the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin

Example

When you solve a maths problem or write your name, your cerebrum is working.

5. Cerebellum

The cerebellum is located below the cerebrum.

Functions of the Cerebellum

  • Maintains body balance.
  • Controls posture.
  • Coordinates muscle movements.
  • Helps us walk, run, jump, and ride a bicycle smoothly.

Example

When you ride a bicycle without falling, your cerebellum helps you keep balance.

6. Brain Stem (Basic Information)

The brain stem connects the brain to the spinal cord.

It controls actions that happen automatically, such as:

  • Breathing
  • Heartbeat
  • Swallowing
  • Digestion

7. Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves connected to the brain. It is protected by the backbone (vertebral column).

Functions of the Spinal Cord

  • Carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
  • Controls quick actions called reflex actions.
  • Helps us respond quickly in emergencies.

Example

If you accidentally touch a hot pan, you quickly pull your hand away. This is a reflex action controlled by the spinal cord.

8. Nerves

Nerves are thin, thread-like structures spread throughout the body.

They connect the brain and spinal cord to all body parts.

Functions of Nerves

  • Carry messages to the brain.
  • Carry commands from the brain.
  • Help us move.
  • Help us feel touch, pain, heat, and cold.

9. Sense Organs

Sense organs help us know what is happening around us.

There are five sense organs.

10. How Sense Organs Work

  1. A sense organ receives information.
  2. The nerves carry the message to the brain.
  3. The brain understands the message.
  4. The brain sends instructions if needed.

Example

You touch a hot object.

  • Skin detects heat.
  • Nerves carry the message.
  • Brain understands the danger.
  • Brain tells your muscles to pull your hand away.

11. Reflex Action

A reflex action is a quick and automatic response to danger.

It happens without thinking.

Examples

  • Pulling your hand away from a hot object.
  • Blinking when dust enters the eye.
  • Sneezing.

12. How to Keep the Nervous System Healthy

  • Eat healthy food rich in vitamins.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Sleep for 8–10 hours every night.
  • Wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.
  • Avoid injuries to the head and back.
  • Keep your sense organs clean.
  • Avoid loud noises and excessive screen time.
