2. Previous Knowledge /

Ask students:

  • Have you ever seen a mountain?
  • Have you seen a flat field?
  • Have you visited a beach?
  • What does a desert look like?
  • Is the land everywhere around us the same?

Teacher explains:

“The surface of the Earth is not the same everywhere. Some places are high and steep, some are flat, some are dry, and some are near the sea. These different natural features of the Earth's surface are called landforms.”

3. What are Landforms? /

Simple Definition

Landforms are natural features of the Earth's surface.

Examples:

  • Mountains –
  • Plains –
  • Plateaus – पठार
  • Deserts –
  • Coastal Plains –
  • Islands –

4. Major Landforms of India /

India has great variety in its physical features.

For Grade 3, introduce these six major physical divisions:

  1. The Himalayan Mountains –
  2. The Northern Plains –
  3. The Peninsular Plateau –
  4. The Indian Desert –
  5. The Coastal Plains –
  6. The Islands –

5. The Himalayan Mountains /

The Himalayas are high mountain ranges in the northern part of India.

Features:

  • They are very high mountains.
  • Many peaks remain covered with snow.
  • Several important rivers originate in the Himalayan region.
  • They act as a natural barrier in the north.
  • They are home to many plants and animals.

Simple explanation:

Mountains are high areas of land with steep slopes.

Examples of activities:

  • Tourism
  • Farming in suitable valleys
  • Animal rearing

6. The Northern Plains /

The Northern Plains lie south of the Himalayas.

They are mostly flat and fertile.

Features:

  • Flat land
  • Fertile soil
  • Many rivers flow through the region
  • Good for farming
  • Many towns and cities are located here

Important rivers:

  • Ganga –
  • Yamuna –
  • Brahmaputra –

Why are they important?

The fertile soil makes the Northern Plains excellent for agriculture.

7. The Peninsular Plateau /

A plateau is a raised area of land with a relatively flat top.

The Peninsular Plateau is located mainly in southern India.

Features:

  • It is an elevated area.
  • It has hills, valleys and rocky areas.
  • It is rich in many minerals.
  • Some important rivers flow through it.
  • Different crops are grown in this region.

Simple comparison:

Mountain → High and steep

Plain → Flat and low

Plateau → High but fairly flat on top

8. The Indian Desert /

The Indian Desert, also known as the Thar Desert, lies mainly in Rajasthan.

Features:

  • Very little rainfall
  • Dry climate
  • Sandy land
  • Sand dunes are common
  • Days can be very hot
  • Special plants and animals live here

People

People living in desert areas have adapted to the dry environment.

9. The Coastal Plains /

The Coastal Plains are areas of low, flat land along the sea.

India has a long coastline.

There are two broad coastal regions:

Western Coastal Plains

Located along the Arabian Sea.

Eastern Coastal Plains

Located along the Bay of Bengal.

Importance:

  • Fishing
  • Farming
  • Ports
  • Tourism
  • Trade

10. The Islands /

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water on all sides.

India has groups of islands:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Located in the Bay of Bengal.

Lakshadweep

Located in the Arabian Sea.

Importance:

  • Fishing
  • Tourism
  • Coconut cultivation
  • Marine life
