By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

PERIOD 1 – INTRODUCTION TO MINERALS

A. Warm-up / प्रारंभिक चर्चा

Teacher shows students common objects such as:

  • Iron nail – लोहे की कील
  • Copper wire – ताँबे का तार
  • Salt – नमक
  • Pencil – पेंसिल

Ask:

  • What are these objects made of?
  • Where do the materials used to make them come from?
  • Can we get iron, copper or salt from plants?

English:

Many things that we use every day are made from materials obtained from the Earth. Some of these materials are called minerals.

Hindi:

हम अपने दैनिक जीवन में जिन अनेक वस्तुओं का उपयोग करते हैं, वे पृथ्वी से प्राप्त पदार्थों से बनाई जाती हैं। इनमें से कुछ पदार्थों को खनिज (Minerals) कहा जाता है।

B. What is a Mineral?

खनिज क्या है?

English:

A mineral is a naturally occurring substance found inside or on the Earth's crust. Minerals are formed naturally over a very long period of time.

Hindi:

खनिज एक प्राकृतिक रूप से पाया जाने वाला पदार्थ है जो पृथ्वी की सतह के ऊपर या उसके अंदर पाया जाता है। खनिज बनने में बहुत लंबा समय लगता है।

C. Where Are Minerals Found?

खनिज कहाँ पाए जाते हैं?

English:

Minerals are found in different parts of the Earth. Some are found near the surface, while others are found deep underground.

Hindi:

खनिज पृथ्वी के अलग-अलग भागों में पाए जाते हैं। कुछ खनिज पृथ्वी की सतह के पास पाए जाते हैं, जबकि कुछ बहुत गहराई में पाए जाते हैं।

Minerals may be found:

  • In rocks – चट्टानों में
  • Under the ground – भूमि के नीचे
  • In mines – खदानों में
  • In some areas of mountains – पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों में

At Grade IV level, introduce two broad groups:

1. Metallic Minerals

धात्विक खनिज

English:

Metallic minerals contain metals or provide metals when processed. They are used to make many useful things.

Hindi:

धात्विक खनिजों में धातु होती है या उन्हें संसाधित करने पर धातु प्राप्त होती है। इनका उपयोग अनेक उपयोगी वस्तुएँ बनाने में किया जाता है।

Copper – ताँबा

Uses:

2. Non-Metallic Minerals

अधात्विक खनिज

English:

Non-metallic minerals do not provide metals. They are also very useful to us.

Hindi:

अधात्विक खनिजों से धातु प्राप्त नहीं होती। फिर भी वे हमारे लिए बहुत उपयोगी होते हैं।

Examples:

Limestone – चूना-पत्थर

Used in:

  • Making cement
  • Construction

Hindi:

इसका उपयोग सीमेंट बनाने और निर्माण कार्यों में किया जाता है।

Mica – अभ्रक

Mica is used in some electrical and industrial products.

अभ्रक का उपयोग कुछ विद्युत और औद्योगिक उत्पादों में किया जाता है।

Salt – नमक

Salt is used in:

  • Cooking
  • Food preservation
  • Several industrial processes

नमक का उपयोग भोजन बनाने, भोजन को सुरक्षित रखने तथा कई औद्योगिक प्रक्रियाओं में किया जाता है।

Iron / लोहा

English:

Iron is one of the most useful metals. It is strong and is used to make machines, tools, vehicles, railway tracks and parts of buildings.

Hindi:

लोहा सबसे उपयोगी धातुओं में से एक है। यह मजबूत होता है और इसका उपयोग मशीनों, औजारों, वाहनों, रेलवे पटरियों तथा इमारतों के कुछ हिस्सों को बनाने में किया जाता है।

Copper / ताँबा

English:

Copper is a good conductor of electricity. Therefore, it is widely used for making electrical wires.

Hindi:

ताँबा बिजली का अच्छा चालक है। इसलिए इसका उपयोग विद्युत तार बनाने में बड़े पैमाने पर किया जाता है।

Classroom connection:

Teacher can show an electrical wire and explain that copper is commonly used inside many electrical wires.

Gold / सोना

English:

Gold is a valuable mineral. It is commonly used for making jewellery. Small amounts of gold are also used in some electronic devices.

Hindi:

सोना एक मूल्यवान खनिज है। इसका उपयोग मुख्य रूप से आभूषण बनाने में किया जाता है। कुछ इलेक्ट्रॉनिक उपकरणों में भी थोड़ी मात्रा में सोने का उपयोग होता है।

Limestone / चूना-पत्थर

English:

Limestone is an important non-metallic mineral. It is an important raw material for making cement.

Hindi:

चूना-पत्थर एक महत्वपूर्ण अधात्विक खनिज है। यह सीमेंट बनाने के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण कच्चा पदार्थ है।

Connect with students:

“What material is used to build many houses and school buildings?”

Students may answer: Cement.

Then explain:

“Limestone is one of the important materials used to make cement.”

PERIOD 4 – MINING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

What is Mining?

खनन क्या है?

English:

The process of taking minerals out of the Earth is called mining.

Hindi:

पृथ्वी के अंदर से खनिजों को निकालने की प्रक्रिया को खनन (Mining) कहते हैं।

Simple Example

Iron ore → Mining → Processing → Iron → Useful products

लौह अयस्क → खनन → प्रसंस्करण → लोहा → उपयोगी वस्तुएँ

English:

A mine is a place from where minerals are extracted from the Earth.

Hindi:

खदान वह स्थान है जहाँ से पृथ्वी के अंदर से खनिज निकाले जाते हैं।

Types at Grade IV Level

Students can be introduced to:

Open-cast mining:
Minerals are taken out from deposits close to the surface.

भूमि की ऊपरी सतह के पास पाए जाने वाले खनिजों को ऊपर से खोदकर निकालना।

Underground mining:
Minerals are taken out from deep inside the Earth through tunnels or shafts.

भूमि के बहुत अंदर पाए जाने वाले खनिजों को सुरंगों या गहरी खदानों के माध्यम से निकालना।

India has many different mineral resources.

भारत में अनेक प्रकार के खनिज संसाधन पाए जाते हैं।

  • Bauxite – बॉक्साइट
  • Limestone – चूना-पत्थर

Are Minerals Unlimited?

क्या खनिज असीमित हैं?

English:

No. Minerals are limited natural resources.

They take a very long time to form. We cannot quickly replace the minerals that we take out and use.

Hindi:

नहीं। खनिज सीमित प्राकृतिक संसाधन हैं।

इन्हें बनने में बहुत लंबा समय लगता है। इसलिए हम जिन खनिजों को निकालकर उपयोग कर लेते हैं, उन्हें जल्दी से दोबारा नहीं बना सकते।

1. Minerals are limited.

Use useful items again whenever possible.

Metals such as iron, aluminium and copper can often be recycled.

Saving electricity can reduce the need for some mineral-based resources used in energy production and infrastructure.
