Verb वह शब्द है जो किसी कार्य, घटना या अवस्था को व्यक्त करता है।

Examples

  • The baby cries.
  • Birds fly.
  • She is happy.
  • They have a car.
  • We study English.

In these sentences, runs, cries, fly, is, have, study are verbs.

Teacher Explanation / शिक्षक की व्याख्या

Teacher says:

“Whenever we want to tell what someone or something does, what happens, or what someone or something is, we generally need a verb.”

जब हम बताते हैं कि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु क्या करती है, क्या होता है या उसकी अवस्था क्या है, तब सामान्यतः Verb का प्रयोग होता है।

PERIOD 1 – Introduction and Identification of Verbs

Step 1: Warm-up Activity

Teacher writes:

  1. Rahul plays football.
  2. The dog barks.
  3. Meena sings beautifully.
  4. The sun shines.
  5. The children laugh.

Ask students:

Which words tell us about an action?

Students identify:

plays, barks, sings, shines, laugh

Hindi Explanation

इन सभी शब्दों से पता चलता है कि Subject क्या कर रहा है। इसलिए ये Verbs हैं।

4. Types of Verbs – Basic Classification

For Grade VI and VII, introduce the following:

  1. Main Verb
  2. Helping Verb
  3. Transitive Verb
  4. Intransitive Verb
  5. Linking Verb
  6. Regular Verb
  7. Irregular Verb
  8. Finite Verb
  9. Non-finite Verb

These can be introduced gradually rather than all at once.

PERIOD 2 – Main Verb and Helping Verb

A. Main Verb / मुख्य क्रिया

A main verb is the principal verb in a sentence. It tells us the main action or state.

Main Verb वाक्य की मुख्य क्रिया को व्यक्त करता है।

Examples:

  • She writes a letter.
  • They play cricket.
  • Rahul eats an apple.
  • We study English.

Here:

writes, play, eats, study = Main Verbs

B. Helping Verb / सहायक क्रिया

A helping verb helps the main verb express tense, question, possibility, ability, necessity, etc.

Helping Verb, Main Verb की सहायता करता है और Tense, प्रश्न, संभावना, क्षमता, आवश्यकता आदि को व्यक्त करने में मदद करता है।

Common Helping Verbs

Be: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been

Have: have, has, had

Do: do, does, did

Modal Helping Verbs

can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, ought to

Examples

  • She is reading.
  • They are playing.
  • I have finished my work.
  • He has eaten lunch.
  • We will go tomorrow.
  • You can swim.

In:

She is reading.

  • is = Helping Verb
  • reading = Main Verb

Hindi Explanation

“is” अकेले मुख्य कार्य नहीं बता रहा है। यह “reading” की सहायता कर रहा है। इसलिए is = Helping Verb और reading = Main Verb।

Classroom Activity: Identify the Verb

Teacher writes:

  1. I am writing a letter.
  2. She has completed her homework.
  3. They are playing football.
  4. We will visit Delhi.
  5. He can speak English.

Students identify the Helping Verb and Main Verb.

PERIOD 3 – Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

A. Transitive Verb / सकर्मक क्रिया

A transitive verb is a verb that requires an object to complete its meaning.

Transitive Verb वह क्रिया है जिसके साथ Object का होना आवश्यक होता है।

Examples

  • Riya bought a book.
  • Rahul kicked the ball.
  • She opened the door.
  • The boy ate an apple.

Ask:

Bought what? → a book
Kicked what? → the ball
Opened what? → the door
Ate what? → an apple

Therefore, these are Transitive Verbs.

B. Intransitive Verb / अकर्मक क्रिया

An intransitive verb does not require an object to complete its meaning.

Intransitive Verb को अपना अर्थ पूरा करने के लिए Object की आवश्यकता नहीं होती।

Examples:

  • The baby cried.
  • Birds fly.
  • The sun shines.
  • The children laughed.
  • The old man slept.

The meaning is complete without an object.

Easy Trick

Ask:

Verb + what? / whom?

If a suitable object is needed → Transitive Verb

If no object is required → Intransitive Verb

Example

Rahul kicked the ball.

Kicked what? → the ball

Therefore, kicked = Transitive Verb

Rahul slept.

Slept what? ❌

Therefore, slept = Intransitive Verb

PERIOD 4 – Linking Verbs, Regular and Irregular Verbs

A. Linking Verb / जोड़ने वाली क्रिया

A linking verb connects the subject with a word that describes or identifies it.

Linking Verb Subject को उसके बारे में जानकारी देने वाले शब्द से जोड़ता है।

Common linking verbs include:

am, is, are, was, were, seem, become, appear, feel, look, smell, taste

Examples

  • She is happy.
  • Rahul became a doctor.
  • The soup tastes delicious.
  • The flower smells sweet.
  • He looks tired.

Here, the verb does not show a direct physical action. It connects the subject with information about the subject.

B. Regular Verbs / नियमित क्रियाएँ

Regular verbs form their past tense generally by adding -d or -ed.

Examples:

Present

Past

play

played

walk

walked

clean

cleaned

work

jump

jumped

love

loved

Hindi Explanation

Regular Verbs में Past Tense बनाने के लिए सामान्यतः -d या -ed लगाया जाता है।

gone

eat

ate

eaten

see

write

wrote

written

take

taken

come
