3. Introduction to Adverbs / Adverb का परिचय

Definition

An adverb is a word that modifies or gives more information about a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or sometimes a whole sentence.

Adverb वह शब्द है जो Verb, Adjective, किसी अन्य Adverb या कभी-कभी पूरे वाक्य के बारे में अधिक जानकारी देता है।

Examples

  • Rahul runs quickly.
  • She sings beautifully.
  • He is very intelligent.
  • The boy runs extremely fast.
  • Fortunately, we reached on time.

Here:

  • quickly tells us how Rahul runs.
  • beautifully tells us how she sings.
  • very modifies the adjective intelligent.
  • extremely modifies the adverb fast.
  • Fortunately comments on the whole sentence.

PERIOD 1 – Understanding Adverbs

Step 1: Introduction through Questions

Write on the board:

Riya sings.

Ask:

How does Riya sing?

→ Riya sings beautifully.

Add:

Riya sings beautifully.

Now ask:

When did she sing?

→ She sang yesterday.

Ask:

Where did she sing?

→ She sang there.

Explain that words such as beautifully, yesterday, there give additional information.

These are Adverbs.

4. What Does an Adverb Tell Us?

Adverbs commonly answer questions such as:

How?

Manner

  • He runs quickly.

When?

Time

  • She came yesterday.

Where?

Place

  • Come here.

5. Adverbs and Verbs

An adverb often tells us more about a verb.

  • The baby slept peacefully.
  • Rahul answered correctly.
  • She spoke softly.

Ask students:

How did the boy run?

Thus, these adverbs modify the verbs.

Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.

Adjective

Adverb

quick

quickly

polite

politely

honest

honestly

brave

bravely

quiet

quietly

Examples in Sentences

  • She sings beautifully.

14. Spelling Rules for Forming Adverbs

Rule 1: Add -ly

quick → quickly
slow → slowly
careful → carefully

Rule 2: Adjectives ending in -y

Change y to i and add -ly.

happy → happily
easy → easily
angry → angrily

Rule 3: Adjectives ending in -le

Generally change -le to -ly.

gentle → gently
simple → simply

Important Exceptions

Not all adverbs end in -ly.

  • hard → hard
  • late → late
  • early → early
  • straight → straight

Examples

15. Adjective vs Adverb

Carefully describes the verb drives.

  • He plays well.

PERIOD 5 – Position and Application of Adverbs

The position of an adverb depends on its type and the sentence structure.

  • He completed the work carefully.

B. Adverbs of Place

But they generally come after the verb be.

When several adverbs are used together, a common order is:

  • yesterday → Time

This is a useful general pattern, though English allows variations depending on emphasis.
