  • The boy was carrying a bag.

Which sentence sounds complete and natural?

Explain that words such as a and the are used before nouns to make their meaning clearer.

3. Introduction to Articles / Articles का परिचय

Definition

An article is a word used before a noun to show whether the noun refers to something specific or general.

Articles are:

A, An and The

There are two kinds of articles:

1. Indefinite Articles

A and An

2. Definite Article

The

PERIOD 1 – Introduction to A, An and The

4. Indefinite Articles – A and An

A and An are called indefinite articles because they usually refer to a person, animal, place, or thing in a general or non-specific way.

Examples

  • I saw a dog.
  • She bought a book.
  • He ate an apple.
  • I saw an elephant.

We are not talking about a particular dog, book, apple, or elephant.

5. Use of A

We generally use a before a singular countable noun beginning with a consonant sound.

Examples

  • a boy
  • a girl
  • a book
  • a pen
  • a teacher
  • a school
  • a car
  • a university

Sentences

  • Rahul is a student.
  • She has a bicycle.
  • He bought a book.
  • I saw a dog.

Important Rule

The choice between a and an depends on the sound, not simply the first letter.

6. Use of An

We generally use an before a singular countable noun beginning with a vowel sound.

The common vowel sounds are:

a, e, i, o, u

Examples

  • an apple
  • an egg
  • an orange
  • an umbrella
  • an elephant
  • an idea
  • an engineer

Sentences

  • She ate an apple.
  • He is an engineer.
  • I saw an elephant.
  • She has an umbrella.

7. A or An Depends on Sound

This is one of the most important rules.

We use a before a consonant sound, even when the word begins with a vowel letter.

Examples

  • a university
  • a European country
  • a useful book
  • a uniform
  • a one-eyed man

Why?

Because these words begin with consonant sounds:

  • university → /y/ sound
  • European → /y/ sound
  • useful → /y/ sound
  • uniform → /y/ sound
  • one → /w/ sound

8. Use of An Before Silent H

Use an when h is silent and the word begins with a vowel sound.

Examples

  • an hour
  • an honest man
  • an honour
  • an heir

Sentences

  • I waited for an hour.
  • He is an honest man.
  • It was an honour to meet him.

But when h is pronounced, use a:

  • a house
  • a horse
  • a hotel
  • a hospital
  • a historical event

PERIOD 2 – Definite Article “The”

9. The Definite Article

The is called the definite article.

We use the when we are talking about a particular or specific person, animal, place, or thing.

  • I saw a dog.
  • The dog was very friendly.

First, the dog is introduced generally.

Later, we know which dog we are talking about, so we use the.

10. A/An vs The
