1. What is an Article?
An article is a word used before a noun to show whether the noun refers to something general or something specific.
There are three articles in English:
- A
- An
- The
Articles are divided into two types:
Indefinite Articles
- A
- An
Definite Article
- The
2. Indefinite Articles – A and An
A and An are called indefinite articles because they refer to a person, place, animal, or thing in a general or non-specific way.
Examples:
- I saw a dog in the street.
- She bought a book.
- He ate an apple.
- Riya is an intelligent girl.
Here, we are not talking about a particular dog, book, apple, or girl.

5. A and An Depend on Sound, Not Spelling
The choice between A and An depends on the sound of the word, not simply the first letter.
A before a consonant sound:
- a university
- a European
- a useful book
- a uniform
- a one-eyed man
Although these words begin with vowel letters, their initial sounds are consonant sounds.

- a uniform → /yu.../
- a one-eyed man → /w.../
An before a vowel sound:
- an hour
- an honest man
- an honour

The initial h is silent, so the words begin with a vowel sound.

- He waited for an hour.
- He is an honest man.
- She is an honourable person.
