Extend a Pattern

🐞 Weekly Lesson Plan: Extend a Pattern

Grade: I
Theme: Problem-Solving – Recognizing, copying, and extending patterns
Duration: 1 week (5 days, ~30–35 minutes each day)

Materials:

  • Beads, colored blocks, buttons, sticks

  • Worksheets with simple shape and color patterns

  • Flashcards

  • Chart papers and crayons

πŸ“… Day-wise plan

πŸ“Œ Day 1: What is a Pattern?

Objective: Understand what a pattern is
 Warm-up (5 min):

  • Show students your shirt, tiles, or classroom decoration. Ask: β€œWhat repeats?”

Activity (15 min):

  • Use colored blocks to make a simple pattern: πŸ”΄πŸ”΅πŸ”΄πŸ”΅

  • Ask: β€œWhat comes next?”

  • Let children copy the pattern with their own blocks.

Worksheet / Practice (10 min):

Circle the object that comes next in very simple 2-object patterns:

  •

Closing (2–3 min):

  • Sing a clapping pattern: clap, tap, clap, tap...

πŸ“Œ Day 2: Copy and Make a Pattern

Objective: Copy and create own simple patterns
 Warm-up (5 min):

  • Show flashcards: πŸŸ©πŸŸ¨πŸŸ©πŸŸ¨...

Activity (15 min):

  • Children copy patterns you make using buttons.

  • Then let them create their own 2-color pattern.

Worksheet / Practice (10 min):

Draw the next picture in patterns:

  •

Closing (2–3 min):

  • Share their favorite pattern with the class.

πŸ“Œ Day 3: Extend a Pattern

Objective: Predict what comes next
 Warm-up (5 min):

  • Quick revision: β€œWhat comes after πŸŸ₯🟦πŸŸ₯🟦?”

Activity (15 min):

  • Show Bob’s bracelet: πŸ”΄βšͺπŸ”΄βšͺπŸ”΄βšͺ

  • Ask: β€œWhat comes next?” Let them draw πŸ”΄βšͺ.

  • Show Leon’s pattern: β–²β–²β–Όβ–²β–²β–Ό

  • Ask them to copy and continue.

Worksheet / Practice (10 min):

Extend patterns:

  •

Closing (2–3 min):

  • Quick oral quiz: β€œAfter β€οΈπŸ’šβ€οΈπŸ’š comes…?”

πŸ“Œ Day 4: Find the Rule

Objective: Say what repeats in the pattern
 Warm-up (5 min):

  • Show: βπŸŒ™βπŸŒ™β – ask: β€œWhat repeats?”

Activity (15 min):

  • Show Cass’s pattern: A, B, A, B, A

  • Ask: β€œWhat is next?” Discuss Owen’s guess.

Activity (15 min):

  • Children use beads or paper cutouts to make their own 2- or 3-item repeating pattern.

Worksheet / Practice (10 min):

  • Draw your pattern in your notebook.

Closing (2–3 min):

  • Show pattern to class and say what repeats.

βœ… By the end of the week, students can:

  • Recognize simple patterns

  • Copy and extend patterns

  • Say what repeats

  • Make their own patterns
