Activity Question

Write the three criteria for being a planet.

Activity Response

Answer:

The three main criteria for a celestial body to be classified as a planet (according to the International Astronomical Union, IAU, 2006) are:

  1. Orbits the Sun – The object must revolve around the Sun. (This excludes moons, which orbit planets instead of the Sun directly.)
  2. Sufficient Mass for a Nearly Round Shape – The object must have enough mass for its gravity to pull it into a nearly spherical shape. (This ensures it is not an irregularly shaped asteroid.)
  3. Cleared Its Orbital Path – The object must have cleared its orbit of other debris and smaller objects. (It should dominate its orbital zone.)

Because Pluto does not meet the third criterion, it is classified as a dwarf planet, not a full-fledged planet
